In May 1990 Roy Ayers made his firsl appearance al Ronnie Scott's club in London's Frith Street, and a very sucessful debut it was. The sound of his band on that two week stay can be heard on JHCD 013 "Searchin", which was one of the first releases on the Ronnie Scott's Jazz House label in May 1991.
At the beginning of the 90's Roy was, and indeed still is, a heavily featured artist in London's jazz dance clubs, where his own 'classics' from the 70's and 80's are constantly on the turntables as well as his earlier recordings being sampled on releases by a number of other artists. Asked if he was upset about this pracice, which at the time was causing many artists to decry it, he said in an interview with Ray Douglas in 'Straight No Chaser' magazine, "I'm totally elated by all the people who have sampled me. Every last one of them, because when an individual samples my music they are 100% complimenting me." Roy's philosophy appears to be proving correct, because he has gained a new young audience to add to his original fans who have enjoyed his own brand of jazz-tunk from the early seventies. The sucess of his first stint at Ronnie's saw him return in March 1991 for three weeks, again he packed the club.
Now, he was very much a re-bookable artist and has become a 'regular'. He next appeared in January 1992, and cut his second album for Jazz House, JHCD 021 'Hot". This appearance was reviewed by Jack Massarik in the London Evening Standard, and in that review he said "Give him (Roy Ayers) an insinuating groove - as expertly supplied by his current band, sparked by ex-Stevie Wonder drummer Dennis Davis and guitarist Zachary Breaux -and showtime begins immediately" and indeed it does. Roy's groove starts from the first note and most peoples reaction is the same as Miles Kington's upon seeing Roy perform at the 1993 Cuban Jazz Festival in Havana, tor the first time, "I succumbed immediately, not just to his musicianship but to his showmanship, and so by God did the Cubans", he wrote in Jazz on CD magazine. So even when playing to a largely non-English speaking audience his good vibrations reach out and make contact.
Roy's bands, like most groups has changes in personnel, but the one constant musician in the bands that have played at the club has been guitarist Zachary Breaux, who has "proved himself a star soloist, wildly inventive and projecting powerful feeling", was how Ian Carr reviewed his playing on the 'Hot' album in the Gramophone. During the 1992 season at the club, Jazz House with Roy's blessing, recorded Zachary and released his debut album under his own name, "Groovin"' JHCD 023, which has proved to be very successful in the USA, making an entry in the Billboard Magazine Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. He has since left the band to pursue a solo career, but he was still with Roy when he returned to Ronnie Scott's in January 1993, when this release was recorded. A mixture of new material and old favourites from the Roy Ayers repertoire make up the programme on this album, his third for Jazz House, Roy likes performing live, and he likes the ambience of Ronnie Scott's Club, He likes London, and the London audiences certainly like what they hear. Other record labels have now recognised the interest in Roy's music and have re-released his earlier recordings on CD but we at the club and Jazz House Records are pleased and proud to have helped in some small way to stimulate that interest in this gregarious muci-cian who is welcome to spread his good vibrations around the London scene any time.
