Об альбоме
Two things should hit the listener immediately: the contrast between the standard piano-led trio with bass & drums and the bassless trio with piano, horn(alto.sax), & drums; and the fact that both of these Teddy Wilson Trio sessions are unissued.
It seems quite surprising that so strong as sessions as the September 20, 1954 meeting Teddy Wilson, Benny Carter & Jo Jones should lay for 35 years unreleased in the vaults. This trio was recorded by Norman Granz for his short short live subsidiary NORGRAN. Eight titles were recorded so as to fill out 10" Lp. But as 1955 progressed, the 10" Lp (a vestige of the custom of 10" pop discs in the 78 RPM Era) was dropped and 12" Lp became the standard. The prepared 10" Lp was never released, no second sessions was ever recorded, NORGRAN soon disappeared as Granz reconsolidated under the VERVE name, even the Ep releases were cancelled (a format that never well for Granz), indeed Granz was deemphasizing singles by that point in time and apparently Norman Granz lost track of this all-time all-star trio, the date became forgotten.
Seemingly only Sticks Evans recalls the earlier more standard Trio date of June 3, 1954. Mr. Evans explaing that this was a working band. This Teddy Wilson Trio spent 8 month as a featured attraction on CBS Network Radio, during the last days that radio truly rivaled TV as a prime time force. In fact, Teddy seeing the handwriting on the wall, resigned his job with CBS and revived his jazz career with his appearance in "The Benny Goodman Story", a 1955 Hollywood film-bio. Phil Schaap
